Making Reservations, Purchasing Tickets and Special Requests

Northwest Airlines tickets can be purchased online at nwa.com, through our reservations sales agents at 1-800-225-2525 (TTY 1-800-328-2298) within the U.S./Canada, and through travel agencies. Most of your travel needs and requests can easily be handled at the time you make your reservation.

1. Will Northwest offer me the lowest fare?

Yes. Our reservations sales agents and airport customer service agents use a computer program to search for the lowest fare when you give them your travel itinerary. It's helpful if you can be specific about when you want to travel and whether you have flexibility in your itinerary.

Note: There may be lower fares available through other distribution channels such as Northwest's Web site, nwa.com, at the time the fare is quoted.

2. Will I be able to hold my reservation if I want to explore other travel options?

If you purchase your ticket at the time you make your reservation, you can secure your seat, the fare you've been quoted and a guarantee for a full refund without penalty fees if you cancel your reservation by the end of the next day (midnight of the departure city). If you don't cancel the reservation, however, you will not receive a refund unless you have purchased a fully refundable fare.

Note: Some special offers do not allow a 24 hour hold. These exceptions are noted in the terms and conditions of the special offer. Please read all conditions carefully before purchasing your ticket.

3. Why do airlines sometimes overbook their flights?

Overbooking to certain, pre-determined levels is quite common in the airline industry and helps an airline deal with the frequent occurrence of "no show" customers, who reserve a seat but do not cancel their reservation if they decide not to take the flight. However, the risk of there not being enough seats is quite low. For example, less than 1 per 10,000 Northwest customers are involuntarily denied boarding.

4. Will Northwest tell me if they have sold more tickets than there are seats on my flight?

Yes. If you ask at the time you make your reservation, the agent can tell you if the flight has been overbooked, although this seldom means that you would be unable to get a seat on your flight.

5. Does Northwest offer services for those traveling with special needs?

Yes. We offer a full range of services for various travel situations including travel for people with disabilities and special medical needs, children traveling alone, and pets traveling with or without their owners. Brochures explaining each of these special travel situations are available at Northwest airport locations, at Northwest's web site, www.nwa.com, and from most travel agencies. You can also request a brochure by calling 800-358-3100.

6. If I buy my ticket from Northwest, how will I know if my flight is actually on another airline?

Northwest, like many carriers, has reciprocal agreements with other airlines. As a member of SkyTeam, we offer you convenient access to destinations throughout the world that may not be served directly by Northwest (see a listing of Northwest's codeshare partners at nwa.com). When discussing schedule availability with you, your Northwest reservations agent will advise you if any segment of your itinerary is with one of Northwest's "codeshare" partners or other carriers.

It's a good idea to check your printed itinerary to confirm the operating carrier and check-in instructions for those flights operated by airlines other than Northwest. Because flight numbers sometimes change, you should also verify flight numbers when you arrive at the airport.

It is important to remember that policies regarding luggage allowance and special services like unaccompanied minors, pet travel, special meals, etc. are those of the partner operating your flight and may vary slightly from Northwest's. If you have questions regarding policies, we recommend you check the partner's web site.
