Connections and Destinations

Many of our customers connect through our hubs located in Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/.St. Paul, Tokyo/Narita, Japan and Amsterdam, as well as our alliance partners across the globe. Whether connecting to another flight or reaching your final destination, we want to help you with a smooth transition from our aircraft through the airport. Here are some common questions:

1. Is the "connect time" built into my reservation?

Minimum connect times that allow you sufficient time between flights are factored into Northwest's reservation system. If you are concerned about the connect time between flights, please ask about it when you make your reservation. Northwest's minimum connect times* are:

City Domestic to Domestic (US50) Connection Domestic (US50) to International Connection International to Domestic (US50) Connection International to International Connection
Detroit 30 min 40 min. 75 min. 90 min.

2. What happens if I miss my connecting flight?

On occasion, delayed flights can result in our customers missing their connecting flights. If this happens, a Northwest customer service agent can help re-accommodate you on another flight.

3. Do I have to retrieve my luggage and check-in again for a connecting flight?

Generally your luggage can be checked through to your final destination. You won't have to retrieve it between flights unless you are arriving at your first port of entry into the United States. In this case you must claim your luggage and clear U.S. Customs. You can then recheck your luggage to your final destination. Check-in is not required for connecting flights. Simply present the proper boarding pass (and flight coupon if using paper tickets) for the next flight segment.

4. Where do I claim my checked luggage?

Retrieve your checked luggage from the luggage claim area of the airport. In larger airports, Northwest posts the flight number, the flight's origination city and the luggage carousel number on a terminal screen located in the luggage claim area. Luggage is generally available at the carousel approximately 15 minutes after the flight's arrival time.

5. What if my luggage is lost?
6. Will Northwest deliver lost luggage?

If you have met the time limits for checking your luggage and have not voluntarily separated from your luggage (see examples), Northwest will, at its expense, deliver your luggage to you. Northwest will not assume the expense of delivering luggage to customers who check in late or voluntarily separate from their luggage. Examples of late check-in and voluntary luggage separation include:

  • A customer checks in late: If a customer does not check their luggage within standard luggage check-in times (as listed in the chart in the `At the Airport' section of this guide), "LATE" will be printed on all of the bag tags and Northwest will not accept liability for any expenses incurred as a result of the late luggage arrival. The customer can either pick up their luggage at the airport or Northwest will deliver the luggage to the customer at the customer's expense.
  • A customer takes an earlier flight: In cities with frequent flights between destinations, a customer could check in luggage for their scheduled flight, and choose to take an earlier flight.
  • A customer takes a flight to another airport: In certain circumstances a customer may opt for a last-minute destination change after having already checked luggage.
7. Where do I report damaged luggage or missing items?

All reports of damaged luggage or items missing from your luggage should be made to the Northwest Luggage Service Office located in each airport Northwest serves.

8. What if I need some items until my lost luggage is returned?

Customers who have lost or delayed luggage may request a complimentary kit with a comb, deodorant, razor, shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste from the Luggage Service Office. If you are away from home, you may also request reimbursement for additional items you need to purchase as a result of the delay by presenting receipts at the Luggage Service Office at the airport ($50.00 for the first 24 hours, $25.00/day for each day beyond that up to $150.00 per ticketed customer).

9. Does Northwest have any limitations on lost article reimbursement?

Northwest will compensate you for reasonable, documented expenses incurred as result of loss/delay or damage. However, Northwest assumes no liability for loss/delay or damage to such items as: animals, antiques, documents, electronic equipment, film, jewelry, keys, manuscripts, medication, money, paintings, photographs, photographic equipment, samples, securities, silverware, watches or fragile, irreplaceable or perishable items.
